How I know I'm out of touch

Some days I feel older than others. Most of the time, I feel like an 18-year-old trapped in some old lady's body. But, then I read Billboard's Top 10 in the Sunday paper and I know I'm so not hip anymore. (By the way, do cool people say "hip" anymore?)

I recognize Shakira and Nelly Furtado's names. I've seen Shakira shake her booty a lot on TV. I know the Bad Day song, too. Maybe I've heard the songs, but I have no clue what the are or who these people are.

*sigh*

1. Hips Don't Lie - Shakira
2. Ridin - Chamillionaire
3. Promiscuous - Nelly Furtado
4. It's Goin' Down - Young Joc. Block
5. Bad Day - Daniel Powder
6. Where'd You Go - Fort Minor
7. SOS - Rihanna
8. Me & U - Cassie
9. Unfaithful - Rihanna
10. Temperature - Sean Paul

Thanks to Radio Disney, I am also familiar with Rihanna (albeit the "Disney" versions of her songs) but otherwise I'm just as lost on this list.

I don't think its that you're out of touch...I think it has more to do with the mainstream music industry being a wasteland of pre-packaged "talent" or hip hop. There are not a whole lot of people out there that keep up with music more than me and even I can't place some of these.

Sadly...most of this stuff is usually bought by kids and their parents have NO idea what they are listening to...try this on for size...

I been drinkin and smokin holdin shit cause a brother can't focus
I gotta get to home 'fore the po po's scope this big ol Excursion swerving all up in the curve man
Nigga been sippin on that Hennessey and the gin again is in again we in the wind
Doin a hundred while I puff on the blunt
And rollin another one up, we livin like we ain't givin a fuck
I got a revolver in my right hand, 40 oz on my lap freezing my balls
Roll a nigga tree, green leaves and all
Comin pretty deep, me and my do-jo
I gotta get back to backstreets

Yeah...that's from Chamillionaire located at #2. It also slams cops in the song. Sounds great...I'm sure that kind of crap will lead our youth of today to a higher purpose.

I could go on and on, but its almost too easy...if you want an eyeopener go check the lyrics of some of those songs. Though it is sad to see Nelly Furtado going hip hop and sounding like a whore...she really has some talent, but this song does not represent it...though this line is funny:

N:Hey is that the truth or are you talking trash
Is your game M.V.P. like Steve Nash

"I know I'm so not hip anymore"

Well Jeebus H. Jumped Up Criminy on a friggin's pogo stick. Welcome to my f***in' world.

But for reference, if you need lessons in hip, I know all about it.

Don't think of it as being "out of touch". It's the era of freaking Clear Channel radio. You feed people the same crap often enough and tell them it's good, soon they begin to like the taste of it. Thank you sir, may I have another craptastic artificial pop song by a 13 year old telling me about the heartache of love... shut up you prepubescent bitch! Sorry... minor rant there...

Point is, there's good music out there you just have to search for it. Satellite radio is a pretty good source since there are so many channels they can play stuff that you wouldn't hear normally.

By the way.. we need to go see a show. Keep your eyes open!

I feel old. Only one name on that list looked familiar.
