Inauguration Day

Isn't there a song that sound something like that? Like a U2 song or something? I can't remember.

I got up WAY too early this morning. But, it is good to allow me a bit to get ready for the big day. I go work a half-day today to get things started before I go back in on Monday.

It is also inauguration day and if you want to see the latest Jib Jab on the President's second term, go check it out. I think it must be pretty busy because I'm having a helluva time getting it to load.

Official inaugural stuff can be found at the White House's site.

No offense on this one but...

Hundreds, nee thousands, dying in Iraq to, in part, find WMDs and Bush throws a $40 million-plus party. Woo hoo! Let's get down!

I have to say, even as much as I once liked this man, this should have been dramatically scaled back. I don't agree with a celebration of this sort in a time of war. I think this money could have been directed in a much better way - such as to war widows and other soldiers' families. This to me is equivalent to those families who spend $100K on a wedding and then can barely remember any of it a month later. Stupid waste of money.

    Had to get that out...

Apologies - I've just been informed by someone offline that I'm a troll (whatever that is) for making this post to an otherwise pleasant blog entry. (I'm new to the rules of blogging). I just had to vent a little. I do assume all comments are welcome here - even if they come from a fading conservative.

Hey Darren...I had sort of the same feeling about the amount of money, but to be honest, this money was privately donated by corporations and not tax dollars. Granted, the corporations could have spent the $40 million on other things, but its their money and there is no guarantee that the money would have been spent on tsunami victims or war widows. We all know how things work in Washington...corporations line up to spend millions in the hopes of getting into good standing with the powers that be. Trust me...if John Kerry would have won, the money would still be there and the corporations would be lining up to woo the powers that be. Then again, it would probably have turned into the Heinz Catsup inauguration:-)

I think it is sad that politics has even stepped into the celebration of an inauguration. Regardless of politics, I have ALWAYS watched and enjoyed the pomp and circumstance of the inaugurations and (in the past when they happened) the election night parties. Even if a president I don't support is elected, I listen to their remarks and enjoy watching him take the oath.

Along the lines of the cost of the event, it is private money. What a person does with his or her own money (as long as its legal) is really none of my concern. If a corporation wants to give money to the party, cool. If they want to give money to the tsunami relief, cool. If they want to give money to the NAACP, cool. I really don't care.

I don't recall any president short of FDR who didn't have a GIANT gala and party for his inauguration and if my memory serves me right, the only reason FDR didn't have a giant shindig the one time was because he was sick and not up to it.

Uzz: Good to see ya. How have you been? Didn't know about the private money thing - guess I should have paid more attention before shooting my mouth off. A little too preoccupied for that right now, I guess. Mainly just think that amount of money is stoooopid. But Army of Mom is correct saying that if people want to spend that - and it's there money - then that's their right. That's what's great about the country, I suppose.

So I guess my commentary now is that the people spending that kind of money for a party during war time - well, I believe they're stupid and wish they would use that money for something else (such as the war widows or, hell, supplement a few hundred soldiers' pay for what they're going through.) As for this being an American tradition, I don't think that's a good reason to keep having the party - especially when we declared a war. Sure, celebrate - but Bush should have said, "Let's keep it simple, this time around." It just rubs me wrong, that's all.

    But what do I know?

Hey "Sage"...things are well...working full time as a photojournalist and loving every minute of it! As for the money...yeah...I agree...it would be nice for the corporations to spend the money on other things, but its just the cost of doing biz in Washington. Personally I would like to have my own foundation...the Uzz Wants a House and New Car Foundation:-)

Uzz: Glad to hear you like what you do. You can never underestimate the importance of that. "Sage" was my cat I got in Texas, by the way. I need a good anon name if I'm going to wander blog-land, I guess.

AoM: Sorry to go off on Bush on your blog. I know this isn't the forum for that. I've been wrestling with my lifelong conservative leanings lately and I guess I felt the need to vent on something that pissed me off - Thursday's grand ol' party.

Anyway, good luck with your new venture - and go Steelers!

Look ... Darrell here's Uzz, Uzz here's Darrell.

    You guys are too funny.

I think the Patriots may go all the way. *shrug* But, what do I know, I'm just a girl.

And, I hear ya Sage, er, Darrell, about the gala events. I just happen to disagree. I don't begrudge any president for their moment in the light.

I'm afraid you might be right about the Patriots. They're looking good just as the Steelers look vulnerable. I'll hope for the best though. Die-hard since '76 and I'm not gonna quit now! Plus, QB Ben grew up down the road from my grandparents' house.
